Alaverdi
Alaverdi is a small city that doesn't look like much on a map. Then you arrive and understand — there's something here. A gorge, a river, mountains pressing in from every side, and history that goes back further than most places in Armenia. People who choose a social package in Alaverdi tend to come once and then come back.
It's about two and a half hours from Yerevan. The road runs through the Debed gorge — that stretch alone is worth the drive. The landscape there doesn't look like anywhere else in Armenia.
Social package deals in Alaverdi cover accommodation and meals, sometimes outdoor rest areas. Hotels are small and family-run. No large resort infrastructure — but clean, warm, and the food is local.
The area around the city is layered with history. Sanahin and Haghpat — two monastery complexes on the UNESCO list — are both a short distance from Alaverdi. You can visit both in a single day, but it's worth not rushing.
The Debed river and the gorge itself are, for some people, more interesting than any monastery. Walk along it, sit by the water, listen. Alaverdi works for that too.
Best time is summer or autumn. In autumn the colours in the gorge are the kind that photographs never quite get right. You have to see it in person.
When booking a social package in Alaverdi, ask whether the hotel arranges visits to Sanahin and Haghpat. The better places offer guided trips, not just a room and breakfast.
