Eghegnadzor
Yeghegnadzor is the centre of the Vayots Dzor region, but most people drive straight through it on the way to Jermuk or Noravank. That's a mistake. A social package in Yeghegnadzor isn't a second-best option — it's what you choose when you want quiet without crowds and nature without queues.
It's about two hours from Yerevan. The road crosses the Ararat valley then climbs into the mountains — the landscape shifts quickly and the views are worth paying attention to.
Social package deals in Yeghegnadzor cover accommodation and meals. Guesthouses are small and family-run. The food is homemade — local vegetables, fruit, often wine from nearby vineyards. Vayots Dzor is known for its grapes and orchards, and that shows up at the table in a way that's hard to replicate elsewhere.
The surrounding area gives you plenty. Noravank is twenty minutes away. Spitakavor, Gndevank, Areni — all close, all different. The Areni cave, where the world's oldest leather shoe was found, is not something to drive past.
The town itself is unhurried. A market, a few cafes, people who aren't rushing anywhere. Two days here and Yerevan's pace already feels like someone else's problem.
Best time is summer or autumn. During the grape harvest in autumn, Vayots Dzor takes on a different character entirely — different smells, different colours, different mood. Worth timing a visit around if you can.
When booking a social package in Yeghegnadzor, ask about local excursions. The better guesthouses always know where to take you and what's actually worth seeing.
