Vayk
Vayk is the kind of place most people haven't heard of until they end up there. Southern Vayots Dzor, mountains on every side, the Arpa river running alongside the town. People who book a social package in Vayk often stumble onto it almost by accident — and then realise it wasn't accidental at all.
It's about two and a half hours from Yerevan. The road runs through the whole of Vayots Dzor — by the time you arrive, the landscape has already done most of the work. Gorges, a river, cliffs that look large from a distance and enormous up close.
Social package deals in Vayk cover accommodation and meals. Guesthouses are small and quiet. Don't expect much in the way of facilities — but what's there is genuine. Homemade food, local fruit, often wine from nearby. Vayots Dzor wine is worth knowing about — you'll understand after the first glass.
The area around Vayk is rich. Jermuk is twenty minutes away — easy to visit for the day, see the waterfall, come back. Smbataberd fortress and Hermon monastery are both close and both worth the detour. The Arpa river valley is ideal for walking — flat stretches, good views, no crowds.
The town itself is quiet. None of the tourist activity that Jermuk draws, no noise. You sit, you watch the river, time passes in a way that feels intentional.
Summer and autumn are the best seasons. Winter brings snow and stillness, and Jermuk is close enough if you want to ski.
When booking a social package in Vayk, look for guesthouses near the Arpa river. Waking up to the sound of water is worth more than any listed amenity.
